Sage was an old healing plant, sacred to the Romans, and it remains an important culinary herb today. It offers the same complex flavor as common sage, a taste reminiscent of rosemary with a bit of citrus. The fragrant leaves can be harvested at any time in the season.
Purple sage has an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence.
This is a perennial herb so once planted will last year after year. It is grown for its edible qualities, although it looks just as ornamental too.
